Japan Supports the Rehabilitation of Hospitals and Supply of Medical Equipment

in Western Uganda through the Grant of USD 18.17 million

On 28 November, H.E. Junzo Fujita, Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, and Hon. Maria Kiwanuka, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, signed the Exchange of Notes of a grant project totaling JPY 1.817 billion (approximately USD 18 million) , entitled “the Project for the Rehabilitation of Hospitals and Supply of Medical Equipment in the Western Region in Uganda” in Kampala, Uganda.

The project aims to construct facilities and procure medical equipment in three Regional Referral Hospitals (RRHs), namely those in Hoima District, Kabarole District and Kabale District.

These RRHs were built in the 1930s-1950s and have difficulties corresponding to the increase of outpatients with population growth. As a result, waiting rooms and inpatients’ wards are overpopulated, and in-hospital infections are contracted. Also, with the breakdown and shortage of medical equipment, appropriate medical treatments are not taken for emergency patients. Therefore, Japan will contribute to rehabilitating medical facilities and strengthening emergency medical-care systems in Uganda considering the importance of the health/medical sector for its economic and social development.

In the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) held in June this year, Japan expressed its support for improving healthcare systems to achieve the Universal Health Coverage. This project is meant to realise this commitment.
