Bwindi Community Hospital (BCH), established by Church of Uganda in 2004, is situated nearby the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park known for inhabitant of gorillas. Kanungu District is one of the districts with highest maternal mortality rate in Uganda due to its high practice of traditional home delivery. According to 2006 statistics, 60% mothers deliver at home with maternal mortality rate 1.4% (national average 0.8%) and its infant mortality rate 14% (national average 7.7%). BCH handles nearly 200 cases of delivery every month, but it did not have enough beds for patients, thus many of the pregnant mothers had been forced to lie on the hospital floor. Through the project, the maternity ward has been extended, the number of beds increased from 21 up to 43 and necessary medcal equipment procured.
