Kasese District which lies in the western part of Uganda sharing the border with Democratic Republic of Congo was seriously devastated in the civil war by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) insurgency during the 1990s. The people of Kyalhumba Sub-County in Bukonzo County were forced to leave their villages and live in refugee camps as internally displaced persons (IDPs). Since 2000, the central government has taken up measures to resettle them, but their life remains very hard and poor as their farming land and infrastructure have not been fully recovered. Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Micro-Finance Society Ltd is an organization which has been promoting, for the resettled IDPs in Kasese District, formation of farmers’ groups, organic agriculture, group saving and investment in agriculture. Procurement of roasting, grinding and packaging machine through this project will enable Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Micro-Finance Society Ltd to sell the processed coffee at much higher price and increase organic farming, thus directly contributing to generating higher income for the farmers in the community.
