Kitgum and Lamwo district, a new district curved out from Kitgum in 2010, are situated in Northern Uganda bordering South Sudan. Northern Uganda has been heavily affected by LRA insurgencies over the past 20 years with 1.8million IDPs created and social service delivery disrupted. After the peace agreement in 2006, the IDPs has started to return and the government and donor countries continue to support the rehabilitation of the region; however, the basic social and economic infrastructures are still under-developed and people face challenges in re-constructing their life and economic activities. Many people living in Kitgum and Lamwo districts fetch water from unprotected lakes or springs, which often cause water borne diseases. Further, to travel long distance searching for drinking water has traditionally been the burden to women and children, which hinders children from going to schools. The project will improve access to safe water by drilling boreholes and will benefit over 9,600 villagers in the two districts.
