Luweero District is located in central Uganda adjacent to the capital of Kampala. However, statistics shows that about 11% of the school age children in the district are not enrolled in school and the school dropout rate is high, partly due to the lack of adequate facilities in public schools. St. Bruno Kalagala Primary School, located in Kikyusa Sub-County in the district, has 2 classroom blocks with 6 classes and 4 stance pit latrines. However, one of the classroom blocks constructed in 1980 is very old, and its walls and floor, both weak and wobbly, are maintained by soil and cow dung. Moreover, one latrine is used by 95 pupils, causing congestion. While the pupils’ desks have been equipped by donation in sufficient number, the teachers do not have chairs or tables to work on. The deteriorating educational environment is undermining the health and safety of both pupils and teachers. This project will construct 2 classroom blocks (2 classrooms each), a toilet block, and procure desks and chairs for teacher, and thus improving the learning and teaching environment for the children and teachers.
2. Grant Contract Ceremony
The Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, H.E. Kazuo Minagawa, has signed the grant contract with Mr. Sande Kyomya Christopher, Chief Administrative Officer, on 6th March 2013 at the Embassy of Japan.
