Kole District is situated in Lango region of Northern Uganda, a new district carved out from Apac District in 2010. The region was heavily inflicted by LRA insurgencies over 20 years producing around 2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and destructing social infrastructures. Established in 1985, Alito Secondary School was turned into an IDP camp during the conflict. Since 2006, security in the region has been improving and the resettlement of IDPs is progressing, however, resettlement has been difficult due to delay in reconstruction of public infrastructures. Although some basic facilities were repaired in the area, after the school re-opened in 2009, it still lacks a facility for science education. As a result, many of the students fail to finish the basic curriculum appropriately, thus creating widespread science education gap in the region. This project has constructed a science laboratory block where safe and effective practical science lessons are carried out, and thus improves the environment of basic education for 464 students in the school.
