Iganga Secondary School, located in Iganga District in Eastern Uganda, is the only government aided girls’ secondary school in the district. The school, which was established in 1958, currently has 1,358 girl students and 38 visually impaired students. The school has well trained teachers and a librarian, but lacks an adequate library space. Textbooks and reference materials that are supposed to be used on a daily basis are piled up in the store room, making it difficult for the students to access them. Similarly, visually impaired students have only a small resource center which is merely large enough to store their learning materials and braille machines. The reading space in the existing library is also limited and can only cater for 20 students at a time. As a result, most students are compelled to do self-study under the trees and verandahs even in bad weathers. The project will construct a library, and provide 23 desks, 140 chairs and 20 shelves for the library, thus, improving the learning environment for the girl students and the visually impaired students at Iganga Secondary School.
