Kisoro District is located in a mountainous area in the south-western tip of Uganda along the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Infrastructural support is hard to reach in such a remote region. In Muramba Sub-County in which Bunagana Parish belongs to, the rate of access to safe water is very low at 8.5%, which is aggravated in recent years due to the influx of refugees from the DRC. Bunagana Parish serves the population of about 30,200 people. Most of the residents walk 10-12Km or more every day to Lake Chuho or across the border to secure safe water. Many children who fetch water are often late for school and some end up dropping out of school. Women, who are engaged in farming and housekeeping during the day, are compelled to fetch water early in the morning when it is still dark and often the victims of violence. Furthermore, those residents who are unable to have access to hard-to-reach clean water sources often drink unsafe water from the nearby ponds. As a result, about 60% of patients that visit Muramba Sub-County Health Centre are diagnosed with water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, parasites and skin diseases. Through this project, by constructing eight rainwater harvesting sheds and eight water tanks, will improve access to safe water for the communities in Bunagana Parish.
