Kiboga and Kyankwanzi Districts are located in central Uganda. Bukomeero and Ntwetwe Health Centre IVs are the only hospitals that provide free maternity services in the two districts for the population of over 400,000 people. The health centres have well trained midwives and nurses who can care mothers, but lack adequate spaces for the services. Even after utilizing spaces in general wards and immunization halls, the health centres do not have enough spaces for expectant mothers who would need close attention. As a result, mothers are sent back home only to come back for labor. This increases the risk of home births without care and the death toll of both mothers and babies. The project will improve timely access to maternity services for over 9,000 women by constructing a maternity inpatient block at each health centre.
