Arua District, with a population of about 565,300, is situated in the West Nile region of North-western Uganda bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In the 1970s, during the time of Idi Amin, infrastructure in the region had been developed, since the West Nile is his home region. However, as the regime collapsed, much infrastructure was destroyed and the people had to flee to neighboring countries. Today, most of the people have returned to their villages. However, social infrastructures, including medical and health facilities remain underdeveloped. Aripea Health Centre is not an exception, which makes it hard to deal with urgent medical services for antenatal, delivery and postnatal care. It has only one small room for maternity services. Patients in need of urgent maternity services therefore have to be referred to the regional referral hospital in Arua town which is not easily accessible. In this project, a maternity ward will be constructed to improve the delivery services for over 3,600 patients per year in the area.
