Katooke Secondary School was established in 1982 to help the disadvantaged households in the rural area. Initially, the enrollment was 42 students, but soon it expanded to cater for the needs in the area. As in 2012, the school had enrollment of 621 students in total (373 boys and 248 girls) and is the oldest and largest government-aided secondary school in Mwenge North region. Nonetheless, while the basic learning infrastructure is in place, boarding section is not adequate for those students living far-away. There is only one girls’ dormitory with a capacity of 20 students, but currently accommodates twice the limit. As a result, most girl students have to commute for a long distance exposed to many risks of dangers on their way, which has led to a high dropout rate of girl students. Through this project, a new dormitory with a capacity of 160 girls will be constructed, improving the learning environment for the girl students.
