Founded in 2002 as a government institution, Kitgum Core Primary Teachers’ College, located in Kitgum Town of Kitgum District in the northern part of Uganda, has been training primary school teachers from the 4 northern Districts of Agago, Lamwo, Kitgum and Pader. As in 2013, 129 girls and 273 boys are enrolled in the school as boarders due to the long distance most students have to travel. Nonetheless, one of the three dormitories for girls is in fact a multi-purpose building which is not fit to accommodate girl students. It has no window panes, which detoriate the healthy learning environment for students due to excessive dust and rain. Many of the 29 girl students who live in the multi-purpose room suffer from cold and skin diseases, undermining their healthy growth. At the same time, the construction of existing library in the school is incomplete with half-finished internal wall and windows. Currently, the library is dark and dusty, and walls tend to crumble, making the book search and reading difficult. This project will construct a new girls’ dormitory and rehabilitate the existing library, improving the living environment for 29 girls and enable additional 19 more girls to be enrolled annually. It will also contribute to the improvement of the learning environment for 402 students at the school.
