GGP Grant: The Project for the Provision of an Ambulance at Bwindi Community Hospital in Kanungu District

Handover of the key
On 8 September 2021, the Head of Economic Cooperation of Embassy of Japan to Uganda, Mr. Kitamura attended the commissioning ceremony of “The Project for the Provision of an Ambulance at Bwindi Community Hospital in Kanungu District” and formally handed over the new ambulance. During the ceremony, Mr. Kitamura expressed his hope that the donated ambulance will enable the hospital to provide timely emergency medical services.
The project was budgeted with a total grant of 67,000 USD, equivalent to over 200 million Ug Shs. The grant was used to facelift, transport, and register the donated ambulance.
Bwindi Community Hospital was the largest private-not-for-profit hospital in the district with 135 bed capacity. The hospital covers three sub counties and 101 villages with approximately 100,000 people in the area and offers medical services to 30,000 patients annually. Before they received the grant, there was only one ambulance which was procured as second-hand in 2009. Due to road condition in the area, it broke down frequently while transporting patients to the hospital. There was high demand for ambulances for the hospital to respond quickly for emergency cases.
This project procured a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser Ambulance and installed a set of medical equipment in order to provide quick and safer medical services to catchment population of 100,000 people in the area.
The support is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to support community development projects to uplift the life of people at the grassroots. So far, a total of 267 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
