GGP Grant: The Project for the Construction of a Girls’ Dormitory Block and Latrine Block at Ruhaama Secondary School in Ntungamo District

On Wednesday 18 May 2022, Ambassador Fukuzawa attended the commissioning ceremony of “The Project for the Construction of a Girls’ Dormitory Block and Latrine Block at Ruhaama Secondary School in Ntungamo District” and formally handed over the girls’ dormitory block, latrine and shower block, and dormitory furniture. During the ceremony, Ambassador Fukuzawa expressed his hope that the support will strengthen the school’s ownership of the facility, where teachers, board members, and everyone involved take responsibility of the school as if it were their own and work together to make it better.
The project was budgeted with a total of USD 84,060 equivalent to over 292 million Ug. Shs. The support is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to fund community development projects which uplift the life of people at the grassroots level. So far, a total of 274 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
Ruhaama Secondary School was established in 1982 as a community school and currently it is the only public secondary school in Ruhaama Sub County. At the time of requesting for the grant, over 100 girl students were sleeping in the small old dormitory. It was creating unhygienic environment as it was very crowded. Moreover, there was no latrines nearby the dormitory, so they had to walk long distance which exposed them in danger especially during nighttime. As a response to this challenge, the Embassy of Japan supported Ruhaama Secondary Schoool to construct a fully furnished girls’ dormitory and a latrine/bathroom block.
