GGP Grant: The Project for the construction of a classroom block and latrine blocks at Ajoba Primary School in Serere District

On Wednesday 2nd February 2022, Ambassador Fukuzawa attended the commissioning ceremony for “The Project for the construction of a classroom block and latrine blocks at Ajoba Primary School in Serere District” and formally handed over the classroom block, two latrine blocks, and classroom furniture. The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and various district local government officials attended the event. During the ceremony, Ambassador Fukuzawa expressed his hope that the classroom block will improve the students’ studying environment, especially considering that some were studying outside or in temporary structures.
The project was budgeted with a total grant of USD 65,240, equivalent to over 226 million Ug. Shs. The support is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to fund community development projects which uplift the life of people at the grassroots level. So far, a total of 267 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
Ajoba Primary School was established in 2003. At the time of requesting for the grant, there were four classrooms which became inadequate to accommodate all the 745 learners. Parents later constructed another temporal structure of papyrus and grass to accommodate two classes. As a response to this challenge, the Embassy of Japan supported Ajoba Primary School to construct a furnished classroom and two latrine blocks, as well as to procure additional desks for older classrooms.
