Tour of the new facility
On 31 January 2024, Ambassador Fukuzawa attended the commissioning ceremony for “The Project for the Construction of a General Ward at Orungo Health Centre III in Amuria District” and formally handed over the general ward, latrine block, and furniture. During the ceremony, Ambassador Fukuzawa expressed his hope that the facilities will enable those in need of hospitalization gain access to inpatient care, and the health centre maintains the facility well.
The project was budgeted with a total grant of USD 86,975, equivalent to over 303 million Ugandan Shillings. The support is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to fund community development projects which uplift the life of people at the grassroots level. So far, a total of 282 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
Orungo Health Centre III was established in 1947 and had a direct catchment population of 16,700 people from neighboring communities. Due to unavailability of a general ward, an average of 9 patients per day who needs admission were not able to get proper treatment. As a response to this challenge, the Embassy of Japan supported Orungo Health Centre III to construct a furnished general ward to improve health environment.
