On 30th June 2022, Ambassador Fukuzawa attended the commissioning ceremony for “The Project to Enhance the Income Generation of Smallholder Coffee Farmers in Rwandaro Village in Rubirizi District”, and officially handed over three coffee bean drying facilities and a warehouse. At the ceremony, Ambassador Fukuzawa expressed his hope that the project will improve the livelihoods of coffee farmers, expand opportunities for education, and contribute to the growing recognition of Ugandan coffee both in Japan and around the world.

This grant was signed on 10 March, 2020 with a total grant of USD 90,888, equivalent to over 317 million Ugandan Shillings. The support is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to fund community development projects which uplift the life of people at the grassroots level. So far, a total of 274 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.

Rwandaro Farmers Cooperative was established in 2012 and it has supported 600 registered farmers. The solar dryers and the store constructed by the project play a key role in enhancing the smallholder farmers’ livelihood through a remarkable improvement in the quality of coffee beans by preventing degradation of its quality. The coffee produced by the Cooperative attracts better prices and it would boost the farmers’ earnings.
