On 18th May 2021, Charge d’ Affaires of the Embassy of Japan to Uganda, Mr. Horii, attended the commissioning ceremony for “The Project for the Construction of a Solar Pumping Water System in Bukamba Rural Growth Centre in Kayunga District”, and officially handed over the solar pumping water system. At the ceremony, Mr. Horii expressed his hope that the water system will enable women and children to be able to gather water more safely and conveniently.

The project was signed on 13th January 2020 with a total grant of 98,684 USD, equivalent to over 340 million Ug. Shs. The grant was used for the construction of solar pumping water system, Storage Tank (Bukamba service Zone), and Distribution Pipeline (Transmission, Distribution and Service Line). The support is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to support community development projects to uplift the life of people at the grassroots. So far, a total of 267 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.

Bukamba Rural Growth Centre has a population of over 3,120 persons with only 3 boreholes which puts the user ratio per borehole at 1:1040. This has led to overcrowding at the boreholes, and further to time wastage and poor sanitation for the residents. At schools, students’ academic performance is poor because many of them have to spend a lot of time fetching water and miss classes, as well as many women sacrificed their time which otherwise could be used for something productive to enhance their income generation. The water coverage for the people in the community was only 56%, which was far below the recommended national rate of 71%. The provision of the solar piped water scheme improved the water coverage for Bukamba to 85% and resultantly relieve the community of the burden of searching for water. The academic performance of the children as well as the general sanitation and health of the people are expected to improve.
