On 7th June 2022, Ambassador Fukuzawa attended the commissioning ceremony for “The Project for the Construction of a Science Laboratory Block at Francis Ayume Memorial Secondary School in Koboko District”, officially handing over the science laboratory block and furniture. At the ceremony, Ambassador Fukuzawa emphasized that Japan’s cooperation is built on partnership and ownership, and expressed his hope to continue working with local communities, schools, and district authorities to address challenges and promote sustainable development.

The project was signed on 13th January 2020 with a total grant of USD 89,882, equivalent to over 313 million Ug. Shs. The support is a part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), the scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to fund community development projects which uplift the life of people at the grassroots level. So far, a total of 274 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.

Francis Ayume Memorial Secondary School was established in 2009 in Koboko District. In 2019, the school had 581 students including 100 refugee students from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They improvised one of the classrooms into a science laboratory block; however, it did not meet the required standard for a laboratory. As a response to this challenge, the Embassy of Japan supported Francis Ayume Memorial Secondary School to improve their science learning environment by constructing a furnished science laboratory block.
