GGP Grant: Japan Supports Maternity Health in Kotido District

On 11 March, Ambassador Fukuzawa officiated in the commissioning of a newly constructed and fully furnished Maternity Ward at Rengen Health Centre III in Kotido District. “The Project for the Construction of a Maternity Ward at Rengen Health Centre III in Kotido District” was signed between the Embassy of Japan and Rengen Health Centre III in 2018 with a total grant of 105,862 USD equivalent to over 358 million Ug. Shs.
In 2016, the average number of monthly deliveries stood at 55 in Rengen Health Centre III. However, due to the lack of maternity ward, expectant mothers and their delivery were treated in the general ward sharing the space with other patients. This environment put mothers and new-born babies under the risk of having infectious disease. As a response to this challenge, the Embassy of Japan supported Rengen Health Centre to construct a maternity ward with medical furniture, equipment and solar PV system, a latrine block with washroom and a placenta pit.
