Katakwi District is known as one of the districts with high poverty rate (close to 50%) in the Teso region, affected by the LRA insurgents. Its literacy rate still falls behind the national average of 69% rating 72.7% for men and only 44.8% for women giving an average of 58.7%. The selected five schools are the government aided schools which were lacking facilities, and pupils were forced to have classes under the tree or in inadequate old and small classrooms. The project will benefit over 3,500 pupils through construction of two classrooms block in each school. The district contributed to purchase the necessary furniture in each school.
