Japan Funds Water and Health Projects

H.E. Kazuo Minagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, has today signed the grant contracts totalling 208,824 US Dollars, equivalent to over 500M UGX with the representatives of two non-governmental organizations, namely InterAid Uganda and Bubago Integrated Development Association (BIDA) at the Embassy of Japan in Kampala.

Inter Aid Uganda has received 96,546 US Dollars for the project to install rain water harvesting tanks for the communities living in Nyarusiza Sub County, Kisoro district. Through this project, 8 rain water harvesting sheds will be constructed and total of 36 water tanks will be installed to collect rain water for the communities, 5 primary schools, 3 churches and a health centre.

BIDA received 112,278 US Dollars to finish an incomplete maternity ward, construct a new general ward and staff houses at Bukonte Health Centre in Namutumba district. The health centre is faced with congestion due to limited space causing spread of infectious diseases and cross infection. This project will improve the medical environment and emergency service delivery.

The donations above are part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community-based development projects in Uganda. The newly signed projects will bring the total of projects so far funded by GGP to 155 since the Embassy initiated the scheme in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidation of peace and good governance in Africa.
