On 5 May, 2026, H.E. SASAYAMA Takuya, the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Uganda, attended the ceremony to hand over 23 second-hand Japanese ambulances and 7 fire trucks to strengthen emergency and disaster management systems across Uganda. The Minister of Health, the Inspector General of Police, and other guests were present on the day and expressed their appreciation for Japan's cooperation.

The vehicles were handed over to the Ministry of Health and the Uganda Police Force under two projects of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). Uganda has a nationwide shortage of 294 ambulances and 95 fire trucks. With a total shortage of 389 emergency vehicles, the mission of strengthening the emergency and fire prevention system has been a pressing issue. Ambulances: Lira City, Mbale City, Hoima City, Kamapala City, Apac, Buikwe, Bushenyi, Busia, Gomba, Ibanda, Kabale, Kapchorwa, Kitgum, Luuka, Lyantonde, Masindi, Mityana, Nebbi, Oyam, Pallisa, Rakai, Rwampara.

Fire Trucks: Lira City, Bundibugyo, Iganga, Kiryandongo, Luweero, Mpigi, Tororo

This initiative is expected to improve medical transport services and speed up firefighting response in the targeted areas, contributing to strengthening the overall emergency and disaster response system in Uganda.
