GGP Grant: Ambassador's Visit for The Project for the Construction of a Water Tank and Latrine Blocks at Kigaragara Vocational Secondary School in Isingiro District
2026/5/20
On 19 May, 2026, H.E. Ambassador Takuya Sasayama visited Kigaragara Vocational Secondary School in Isingiro District to inspect the 300,000-litter rainwater harvest tank and two latrine blocks that were handed over on August 2025.
The project, titled “The Project for the Construction of a Water Tank and Latrine Blocks at Kigaragara Vocational Secondary School in Isingiro District” (Grant amount: USD 70,508), was implemented under the Japanese Government's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme, in response to a request from ACORD Uganda, a local organization active in the area.
Prior to the implementation of the project, the school’s maximum water harvest capacity was 150,000 litres, which was insufficient to secure a stable supply of water necessary for vocational training. During the dry season in particular, water shortages were severe, and when the storage tanks ran dry, parents were required to cover the cost of replenishing water. In cases where families were unable to afford these costs, students were forced to drop out. In addition, the school relied on pit latrines, many of which were close to full capacity and posed serious sanitation challenges.
Through this project, the installation of a 300,000-liter rainwater harvesting tank and the construction of two toilet blocks have significantly improved access to water and sanitation facilities. As a result, approximately 600 enrolled students can now benefit from a stable water supply and an improved hygienic learning environment. This is expected to enable students to focus more effectively on their vocational training and studies, while also contributing to a reduction in student dropouts caused by financial difficulties related to water costs.
